The building that was the Southeast Public Health Clinic is closer to becoming the future Health Sciences Facility at the Renton Technical College (RTC). The Metropolitan King County Council’s Budget and Fiscal Management Committee sent to the full Council legislation approving the sale of old public health site to RTC.

“This legislation isn’t glamorous but it’s a great example of how King County works to use resources effectively in partnership with the local community,” said Council Vice Chair Reagan Dunn, cosponsor of the legislation. “I’m looking forward to seeing how the sale of this property contributes to the future of the Renton Technical College.”

“It’s always great to see old spaces being put to new use,” said Council Budget Chair Dave Upthegrove, cosponsor of the legislation. “The planned health sciences facility would certainly benefit the community, and I look forward to tracking the progress of this project.”

The over 4 acres of land that will potentially be sold to RTC was the previous site of the health clinic until 2014, when the clinic moved into leased space on the campus of the College. If approved, the legislation would authorize the King County Executive to sell the surplus property to the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges for $2,200,000.

The College plans to build a brand new state-of-the-art Health Sciences building, part of a larger effort to develop a medical education center in partnership with local hospitals and medical providers. The facility would co-locate classroom training, clinical rotations, and education to better serve the community.

The legislation was sent to the full Council for discussion and final action at the Council’s October 16 meeting.
