As we reach the middle of the summer, neighborhood picnic season is in full swing. Here is a list of the upcoming events:
The Sunset Neighborhood, in partnership with the Renton Housing Authority is up first. Their picnic is scheduled for Thursday at the Highlands Neighborhood Center, 800 Edmonds Ave. N.E.
On Aug. 14, the Cascade, Chinquapin, Renton Park and Vantage Glen neighborhoods will get together at Cascade Elementary School, 16022 116th Ave. S.E.
The South Union Neighborhood meets the following night, Aug. 15, at Heritage Park, 233 Union Ave.
Victoria Park, Victoria Hills and the Talbot neighborhoods host their picnic Aug. 21 at Thomas Teasdale Park, 601 S. 23rd St.
On Aug. 22 at Honey Creek Green, between Newport Court Northeast and Olympic Avenue Northeast, will be the Honey Creek Ridge picnic, followed by a clean-up of Sierra Heights Elementary School grounds on Aug. 24.
Liberty Ridge will host their picnic on Aug. 29 at the park on Northeast First Street. They will be hosting a food/clothes/books/school supplies drive during their picnic.
On Aug. 29, the Rolling Hills, Steeple Chase and Eagle Ridge communities will host their picnic at the neighborhood common area, 1601 Rolling Hills Ave. S.E.
Moving into September, Kennydale hosts their picnic on Sept. 4 at Kennydale Lions Park, 2428 Aberdeen.
And finally, wrapping up the season, Earlington’s picnic is scheduled for Sept. 5 at Earlington Park, 272 Thomas Ave S.W.
The City grants funds for picnic expenses based on matching in-kind contributions from the neighborhoods. It also helps coordinate the event by providing Neighborhood Program staff, the Picnic Trailer, food and supplies, such as a barbeque, plastic ware, hot dogs, tables, paper goods, lemonade, chairs and condiments.
The city also provides liaison support as a resource when planning a picnic and the use of City picnic game kit, which includes:
• Buddy Walkers (New!);
• Tug-of-War;
• 24-inch porthole parachute;
• bean bag toss game;
• children’s golf game;
• children’s hurdles;
• hula hoops;
• sack race hoppers; and
• a volleyball system.
