The Renton softball team is keeping spirits up, despite a rough season.

Renton coach Jennifer Thompson said the Indians are focusing on the basics for a roster with just five returning players.

“From the beginning we focused on playing really good defense and knowing where the outs are,” Thompson said. “Now our problem is that we can’t get on base and can’t score runs.”

The team’s inexperience puts it in a vicious cycle as it doesn’t often get to play a full seven-inning game because it trails by so many runs.

“If we can find a way to play seven innings as opposed to the 15-run rule after three, it would help,” Thompson said. “It doesn’t give our subs enough time to get in the game and it doesn’t give us experience we could use. Three innings goes by really quick.”

This is Thompson’s first season as head coach after three years as the junior varsity head coach.

Key players are seniors Wanda Saechin and Tamthy Le. Both have played for the Indians all four seasons. Saechin plays shorstop and Le plays catcher.

Hayley Brunk has been a key for Renton’s offense, while Sabrina Bigelow has taken on the challenge of pitching.

“That’s a tough spot, but she’s working hard and fighting through it,” Thompson said. “She’s definitely improving as the season goes along.”

Key games for Renton to look for its first win of the season down the stretch are April 28 against Highline, May 3 against Foster and May 5 at Evergreen.
