Neighborhoods throughout Renton will mark National Night Out Tuesday, a nationwide effort designed to prevent crime.
The City of Renton will host a National Night Out event 4 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Jones Park, 104 Wells Ave. S., with food, games, party hoppers for the kids and family fun.
The “27th Annual National Night Out” crime and drug prevention event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Renton Police Department.
It involves more than 14,625 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, 36.7 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.”
National Night Out is designed to:
• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
• Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
In Renton, the event is 7-10 p.m. on Tuesday, when residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.
Many neighborhoods throughout Renton will host special events, such as block parties, cookouts, parades, a visit from police, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anti-crime rallies.
To register a neighborhood event, contact coordinator Cyndie Parks at 425- 430-7521 or email. City staff will make every effort to attend each neighborhood function.
