Where once there were painting places for kids to paint pottery, now there are painting and sipping refuges for adults to indulge their creative impulses.
One such shop has recently opened in downtown Renton on Third Street.
Arts-n-Carafes is a painting and wine-drinking experience created by owner Bev Horn.
Horn is a longtime lover of art and is self-taught after having taken classes in high school and college.
She spent years in the advertising sales business and decided to finally pursue something she loves after participating in a similar painting and drinking experience in the Puget Sound area.
“I’ve sold yellow pages, cable television and outdoor signs and Living Social,” said Horn. “And when I did this, I’m thinking well, they say do something that you love and I love to paint.”
Horn is hoping the painting bug catches on and draws adults of different skill levels, including those who don’t know how to paint.
“If they have any creative side to them at all, they don’t have to know how to paint,” she said. “They just have to want to because these paintings are all very easy to do.”
Customers can choose between different paintings they would like to recreate on the company’s website and also what day they’d like have their experience.
Horn then demonstrates how to paint the chosen painting for the day, while customers follow along.
Customers are provided with the canvas, supplies, about two and a half hours of instruction, their first drink and appetizers as part of their admission fee.
“Nothing is drawn on the canvases; you’re doing it freestyle,” said Horn. “Everybody’s will be a little bit different and unique. That’s the cool thing about it.”
