Ongoing rain is pushing a question on Lindbergh baseball coach Benny Benavides that he didn’t think he’d ever have to answer: How hard should he got for a win?
The Eagles play three games this week, including a double header against Kennedy Catholic Wednesday, before starting the sub-district playoffs Friday.
“Do I go into game one (of the double header Wednesday) and use everything I’ve got to get that win and not worry about games after that?” Benavides said. “I’ve never been put in a position where I’ve had to think that way.”
The Eagles are currently 10-1 in league play and hold a slim lead on Hazen for the league lead. Three wins this week would assure the team a Seamount title. Three wins this week could also use up all of the team’s pitching depth for the first playoff game Friday. Pitchers need at least two days of rest in between starts.
“If I pitch my guys for the wins and go all out, I’m not going to have anybody to start Friday,” Benavides said.
The situation would be even more muddled if the Eagles hadn’t been able to play Evergreen Saturday, something Benavides didn’t think would happen for much of the day.
He was out working on the field at 7 a.m. Saturday and had all the water off by 10 a.m., but it was still far too soft to play. Sun came out in the early afternoon and the game was able to go on at 3:30 p.m.
Now, Lindbergh scheduled to play Renton Tuesday afternoon, a game the Monday rain is putting in doubt.
