A new exhibit exploring the city of Newcastle’s history is now at the Renton History Museum.
The collaborative exhibit with the Newcastle Historical Society will be on display now through Feb. 7 in downtown Renton. It explores the city’s roots in coal mining and the differences between it and Renton since it was a company town.
“There’s a section about the Baima House, the last standing Pacific Coast Coal Co. house,” said Elizabeth Stewart, museum director via email. “There are also sections about the Newcastle Historical Society’s efforts to preserve the city’s historic cemetery and a great map that shows historic sites then and now. The exhibit features objects from local historian Milt Swanson’s collection; he was a former coal miner and the most knowledgeable Newcastle historian until his death in January.”
The next presentation on the exhibit is at 5:30 p.m., Nov. 13 and it’s titled “It Took a Village: The Story of Newcastle Coal Mining,” with guest speaker Mike Intelkofer, of the Newcastle Historical Society.
