The Hazen bats could never quite get going Friday night against Auburn Mountainview. The Highlanders fell to the Lions 3-0 in a Seamount/SPSL sub-district game at Russell Road Park in Kent.

Auburn Mountainview got on the board in the first inning. The Lions got runners on second and third with no outs before Hazen pitcher Jimmy Schmidt got a strikeout. An Auburn Mountainview batter than hit a bouncing ground ball. Hazen second baseman John Wall barehanded the ball and threw the runner out at first. Hazen relayed the throw to home for the double play. But the Lion runner on third had scored.

Hazen managed just two hits against Lion starter Brandon Williams. Williams struck out 12 batters.

Auburn Mountainview collected only four hits, but Michael Patenaude hit a two-run home run in the sixth to expand the lead.

The Highlanders play Timberline Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Yelm High School in the opening round of the West Central District III tournament. The game is loser-out.
