Another state trooper was injured when he was hit by an out-of-control vehicle Wednesday night on State Route 167 in Kent. The car was driven by a 49-year-old Renton man.

The pickup-truck driver in the Thursday collision, a 46-year-old Burien man, was arrested and booked into King County Jail for investigation of driving under the influence of drugs.

The collision and icy conditions forced closures on I-5 and I-405 in the Southcenter area at around 5 a.m. Thursday. Drivers were advised to find alternate routes.

The driver of the pickup truck lost control and rotated into the collision scene on northbound I-405, just north of Interstate 5. The trooper was checking for injuries next to collision-damaged vehicles, when he saw rotating headlights moving toward him, according to the State Patrol.

As the red Ford rotated off the road, it struck the trooper and two vehicles that had already been involved in a collision.

In the Wednesday night accident, the car driven northbound on State Route 167 by the Renton man collided in the carpool lane with the patrol car driven by a 32-year-old state trooper at about 10 p.m. The collision occurred just north of Central Avenue in Kent.

The trooper was responding to a collision in the carpool lane; the Renton man lost control of his car on the icy freeway, according to the State Patrol.

The State Patrol is urging motorists to reduce speed whenever there is a possibility of icy roadways. Sudden braking, acceleration and turning that may cause vehicles to lose traction can often be avoided by reducing speed, according to the State Patrol press release.

Wednesday night, crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation treated roads and ramps throughout Puget Sound with anti-icer and de-icer. Drivers should use caution on ramps, bridges, curves and overpasses, according to the transportation department.
