After an ultra-successful girls season that saw nine of 25 swimmers reach state, the Lindbergh boys swim and dive team certainly has some forward momentum heading into the season.
Compound that with the biggest team that coach Roger Miron has had in his 16 years and the Eagles are downright bubbling with excitement.
The team added 16 new swimmers this year, for 25 total, and only two of them returning seniors.
“It was a big shock having all the new guys,” Miron said. “We lost two or three meets last year just because we weren’t very big. … A lot the swimmers are very excited about the season because the size of the team.”
After a 1-6 season last year, Lindbergh started this season 2-0 with a 123-58 win against Highline and a 103-79 non-league win against Auburn Mountainview.
Freshman Andrew Franco-Munoz already has two state times in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 freestyle.
Other standouts are sophomore Aaron Jacobsen, senior Joey Hatch, junior Connor Guhlke and senior Zach Holm.
Hatch is one of six divers on the team. Miron said the coaches will work to find the four best and develop them through this season.
Miron’s swimmers already have 24 district-qualifying times through the first two meets and he’s hoping to duplicate the postseason success the girls team had in the fall.
“It was very exciting to see how they did and we’re looking for the same kind of results with this team,” he said. “Our ultimate goal would be to get inside the top 10 at districts and get as many people into state as we can.”
Lindbergh faces Kennedy Catholic Thursday and faces Renton next Jan. 6.
