With serious pressure for the starting quarterback position for the first time in years, the Seahawks’ Matt Hasselbeck compared the current situation to what it was like competing with Trent Dilfer for the starting spot in 2001 to Foxsports’ Alex Marvez.

“Trent had just won the Super Bowl [in Baltimore]. We weren’t very good and I wasn’t playing very good,” Hasselbeck said. “Fans were chanting ‘Dilfer!’ It didn’t help that he was waving the towel getting everybody up and doing that. It definitely hurt me a little.”

Hasselbeck ended up keeping the starting spot and has had it (when healthy) since then. Dilfer started 12 games in four years with the Seahawks before moving on to Cleveland.

This offseason Seattle traded for quarterback Charlie Whitehurst and signed quarterback J.P. Losman, both have the tools to start if Hasselbeck falters.

Marvez writes Hasselbeck is determined to make the quarterbacks relationship better this time around.

Hasselbeck passed for 17 touchdowns and 3,209 yards in 14 games last season. He also threw 17 interceptions and lost three fumbles, while often scrambling for time behind an injury-ravaged offensive line.
