Southbound exit 4 on-ramp to be metered beginning Sept. 16

According to spokesperson Bart Treece, the meters will not be on all the time, but will be used during peak hours and only when there are backups to the highways.

The Washington State Department of Transportation will begin metering of the on ramp to southbound Interstate 405 at exit 4 beginning Sept. 16.

According to spokesperson Bart Treece, the meters will not be on all the time, but will be used during peak hours and only when there are backups to the highways.

“It’s like waiting in line,” Treece said. “It makes more sense to have everyone take their turn than just rush to the front.”

Treece said the signals were already installed, but signs put up this week are simply to notify drivers of the impending change so they are not surprised.

Treece said there may be some minor backups on surface streets the first time it is used as drivers adjust.

During peak afternoon commute hours, approximately 1,200 cars use the ramp. In total, 21,385 cars use it everyday.
