Renton, region to break ground on extending 27th Street

Local officials will break ground Tuesday morning on the extension of Southwest 27th Street/Strander Boulevard eastward. The event is 10 a.m. at Southwest 27th Street at Naches Avenue Southwest, north of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Local officials will break ground Tuesday morning on the extension of Southwest 27th Street/Strander Boulevard eastward.

The event is 10 a.m. at Southwest 27th Street at Naches Avenue Southwest, north of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Attending the event will be Mayor Denis Law; Renton City Council members; Karen Schmidt, executive director, Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board (FMSIB); Steve Gorcester, executive director, Transportation Improvement Board (TIB); and representatives from Sound Transit and The Boeing Company.

This project is a collaboration of the City of Renton, the City of Tukwila, The Boeing Company, Amtrak, BNSF Railway, Union Pacific Railroad, Sound Transit the State of Washington, including TIB, FMSIB, and the Washington State Department of Transportation, and the US Department of Transportation.

When completed, the fully built-out Southwest 27th Street/Strander Boulevard Connection Project will create a critical east/west connection that is missing between Southwest 27th Street in Renton and Strander Boulevard in Tukwila, and provide an alternate route to I-405 between I-5 and SR-167, according to the City of Renton.
