State to remove Sternoff property in Renton from contaminated-site list

The state Department of Ecology is proposing to remove a property in southern Renton from a statewide list of contaminated sites because it has undergone cleanup.

The Sternoff Metals Corp. site, 1600 S.W. 43rd St., is a 44-acre property redeveloped by Zelman Renton, LLC, according to a state Department of Ecology news release

Zelman completed the cleanup in 2000, under a 1997 legal agreement with the ecology department. Sternoff recycled metal and electrical products and automobiles at the site from 1967 to 1985. The site had soil contamination from petroleum products and other chemicals, and groundwater contamination from various metals, according to the ecology department.

As part of the cleanup, Zelman stabilized 19,000 cubic yards of wastes in cement in repositories under buildings and paved areas. The company also shipped contaminated soil to disposal facilities.

Zelman redeveloped or sold parts of the site after they cleaned up starting in 1998.

Before taking the property off the list, the ecology department wants public comment until March 22.
