The Hazen boys soccer team wrapped up a second consecutive Seamount Championship and  No. 1 seed in the playoffs Friday with a 1-0 win over Kennedy Catholic at Renton Memorial Stadium.

“Wow. And, I really mean wow,” said Hazen Coach Ken Matthews in a press release. “I’m pretty sure the guys will be happy not to have to hear about those two things every day.”

Those in attendance saw a great game. Hazen knew they were facing an improved Kennedy team from the one who they drew earlier this year, but the Highlanders have improved as well.

“I know every coach probably says this; but we do have special group of guys in our program this year. You see it at practice and during games,” Matthews said.

In Friday’s game, it came down to the final two minutes. Both teams had numerous chances all game, but the two best keepers in the league came up with save after save.

In the 79th minute senior midfielder Devin Sando connected on a corner kick from freshmen Reyes Garcia for the goal that gave Hazen the championship.

“Reyes was on the bench because of a yellow. Devin went out with a bloody nose. Guys were playing their guts out.  We put both of them back in because guys were gassed, Matthews said. “They made me look like a genius.”

Junior Defender Tony Lopez was the Just Play Fair award winner and Man of the Match.

Hazen wraps up the regular season tonight at Tyee.
