Volunteers needed to read to children

United Way of King County is looking for volunteers to read with children one-on-one at select preschools, Head Start classrooms and childcare centers throughout King County.

United Way of King County is looking for volunteers to read with children one-on-one at select preschools, Head Start classrooms and childcare centers throughout King County.

According to United Way of King County, a typical child from a low-income family enters kindergarten with a listening vocabulary of 3,000 words, while a typical child of a higher income family enters with a listening vocabulary of 20,000 words. Volunteer readers can help bridge that gap.

Volunteer readers are needed at:

• Renton Head Start, 2607 Jones Ave. S., Wednesdays, 10:15 – 11:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

• Harmony Early Childhood Education Center, 225 Logan Ave. S., Wednesdays, 9 – 10 a.m., Thursdays, 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
