A new independent record store has attracted one of the biggest names in music ever to perform in Renton.
Exene Cervenka is the mother of West Coast punk, at least according to Tyrannosaurus Records (TRx) owner Nich Sullivan.
“She was the front woman of a punk band X, which is famous because it’s one of the first of the punk bands in Los Angeles,” he said. “It’s a huge deal.”
Sullivan opened TRx, Renton’s only record store, last summer in downtown Renton with hopes of building up Renton’s music community.
Alongside selling only independent labels, he opened a recording studio and sells albums from local artists. Part of his dream was also to host music in Renton.
“It’s arguably one of the biggest artists who have played in Renton,” he said.
April 17 is record-store appreciation day. To honor the day, Cervenka was scheduled to sing at several locations in Seattle, when Sullivan got the opportunity to host her.
“Exene wanted to stay away from only doing the big record stores, because she’s cool like that,” he said.
The show starts at 2 p.m. and should include a 30 to 45 minute set. Cervenka’s newest album will be available for sale, along with a limited selection of old X records on vinyl.
Musician Devin Moore plans to open the event at about 1:30 p.m. TRx is located on 914 S. Third St., Renton.
