After finishing just short of its first state appearance since 2002, the Lindbergh softball team is back and looking for more this spring.

The Eagles are off to a 5-2 start (4-2 in league play) and in third place in the Seamount, first among 2A teams. The team hopes to repeat last season’s first-round bye in the district tournament, but change what happened after that – an 0-2 record.

“We feel we have a pretty good team,” said Lindbergh coach Larry Laliberte. “It’s well balanced and we can play defense with anybody.”

The young team has just two seniors on the roster. Key players are junior pitcher Danielle Danao, junior shortstop and pitcher Paula Farrell, junior center fielder Maria Cornell and senior Adriana Bernal. Bernal plays first base and designated hitter.

Lindbergh’s only losses have come 8-2 against Highline March 23 and 7-1 against Kennedy Catholic April 4, the top two teams in the league.

“Absolutely, this will be a team that gets better down the line,” Laliberte said. “If we can stay away from the little mistakes. They always seem to cost us.”

Laliberte also said the rainy weather has been tough on the team because of it’s youth.

“We just have to get better,” he added.

Lindbergh takes on Renton at home April 20 to start the run of the final eight league games.

Hazen

After starting the season with league losses to Lindbergh and Kennedy Catholic, the Highlanders have won two out of three league games (beat Evergreen and Renton, lost to Highline).

Renton

The Indians have bounced back after a slow start against tough competition. Against Lindbergh and Highline, Renton lost by a combined 40-1. But the team has won two out of its past four, beating Tyee 10-9 and Evergreen 14-12.

The Patriots (4-6, 4-2 KingCo 3A/2A) are in fourth place in the KingCo 3A/2A.

Despite a record under .500, the Patriots have been a tough out. They have been competitive in every loss against strong teams in Mount Si and Lake Washington.
