October Youth of the Month | RENTON ROTARY

The award is given to students with leadership abilities, a good GPA, and who participate in activities and volunteer.

Rotary members recognize three Renton School District high school students each month as Youth of the Month.

October Rotary Youth of the Month are:

Jessica Nguyen

Senior at Hazen High School

Nguyen holds a 3.992 GPA. She is involved in HOSA (Health OccupationStudents of America), New Generation Club, YMCA Earth Service Corps, National Honor Society, track and field, swim, Key Club, symphonic band, women’s choir, College Access Now, Student Mentor Program, Officer of Earth Corps Recycling Club and is a section leader in marching band. She has received the AAUW Science Award, AP Scholar Award, Outstanding Junior Award, Spirit of the Highlander Award, Allied Arts of Renton Scholarship Winner, Honor Roll, Academic State Champion, National Honor Society Member and Certificate of Merit in Service. Nguyen volunteers at St. Anthony’s Youth Group, Honey Dew Elementary PTA, St. Matthew’s afterschool program and Northwest Harvest. Nguyen plans to attend a four year university to study animation or computer science.

Layla Mahmood

Senior at Lindbergh High School

Mahmood holds a 3.993 GPA. She is involved in Eagle Crew, DECA president, National Honor Society, FBLA, and was a robotics summer camp mentor and programming lead. She has received Masons Outstanding Student of the Year Award, AAUW Stem Achievement Award, Robotics Varsity Letters, and has been the Student of the Month, DECA State Qualifier in Business Finance and Operations Research and FBLA State Qualifier. Mahmood volunteers at Vegefest, Studyzone Tutor and a Daycare Center. Mahmood plans to attend UC Berkeley or Stanford to study computer science. She hopes to become a software developer.

Jeremy Caldeira

Senior at Renton High School

Caldeira holds a 3.99 GPA. He is involved in Key Club and NHS. He is the captain for the track team, and JV and C-team basketball. He is also Renton Peer Mentor president; treasurer, president and drum major for band; and president and founder of jazz club. He is also a three year letterman for track, elected most inspirational in MVP basketball, Track Warrior Award recipient, Matter of the Heart Award recipient,math, language arts and history department award recipient. He is a three year Honor Roll student and has perfect attendance. He works part time as a fielder at Safeco Field and he volunteers with the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, King County Library System and Camp 4-star. Caldeira plans on achieving a Bachelor’s in statistics, data science or actuarial science. He hopes to become a statistician or actuary.

After being selected by counselors at each of the district’s three comprehensive high schools, a selection committee of Rotary members reviews applications and interviews students to identify those who will be selected as Youth of the Month. The award is given to students who possess leadership abilities, maintain a good grade point average, participate in school activities and volunteer in their community.

The students and their parents are honored guests at a regular Rotary luncheon.
