Sometimes a buzzer-beater isn’t quite enough.
When Renton’s Achoki Moikobu hit a fadeaway from the baseline to give the Indians the lead over Enumclaw as time expired in the fourth quarter, Renton players ran onto the floor, fans started to storm the court and Moikobu ran to the center of the floor with his arms raised.
But seconds later officials changed the original call to say the shot was no good. The teams headed to overtime.
Enumclaw outscored Renton 8-2 in the extra period Friday night at the neutral court at Foster High School and won the game 55-49.
With the win, Enumclaw (20-1) takes the first seed to the West Central District tournament, while Renton (17-2) takes the second.
The game lived up to its billing with a combined two losses and two league championships between the teams.
Renton trailed by six points at the end of the first quarter and the end of the first half. The Indians turned their offense up a notch in the third quarter and took a one-point lead heading into the fourth.
Both teams increased the defensive intensity and the two combined for just four points in the final five minutes of regulation.
Enumclaw’s Jayson Lewis nailed a jumper from the free throw line with more than two minutes left to bring the game to 47-47.
The teams traded possessions until Moikobu’s shot at the buzzer.
“It was close,” said Renton coach Rick Comer. “When I watched it on video later, it was even closer.”
Lewis was the key for the Hornets. The junior led all scorers with 27 points, 16 of which came after half time.
“They just kept finding No. 4 (Lewis),” Comer said. “We were too slow to rotate, or didn’t rotate at all. Lewis made the biggest difference in the game.”
Joseph Holifield led Renton with 18 points. Moikobu scored 17 points and Nathan Guy scored 10.
Renton play Foster tonight in the first game of the district tournament. The Indians beat Foster 74-71 Jan. 14 and 73-67 Feb. 13.
