An 8-year-old boy is in critical, but stable, condition after a suspicious injury around 6 p.m. on Memorial Day at Riverview Park on Maple Valley Highway.

The child’s parents were getting ready to leave when his mother noticed him behaving abnormally, according to a Renton Police Department press release. She then discovered a wound on the child’s side.

The mother told police she heard a “pop” that she assumed was fireworks before noticing her son’s injury.

The child was taken to Overlake Hospital, where staff called Bellevue Police Department believing the injury was caused by gunshot. He was then transferred to Harborview Medical Center.

Harborview staff are working with Renton investigators to figure out if the wound was a gunshot or if the child was struck by another projectile, such as a high-powered air gun.

There are no reports of gunfire in the area at the time, according to the press release. This does not appear to be related to the shooting at Seattle’s Pritchard Island Beach Park yesterday, where a woman and two children were injured, according to police.
