A Seattle-based research study called CovidWatch is looking for more Spanish-speaking volunteers to participate.
The original study started by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in April, investigates infection rates, transmission times and potential re-infections of the coronavirus, according to a press release. Now the project has launched a Spanish-language version of the website, hoping to reach Washington’s Latino and Hispanic populations who have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.
Participants of the study will be enrolled for at least six months, collect weekly nasal swabs and blood antibody testing with at home self-screening devices. Volunteers must be 18 or older, have a high risk of exposure at home or work to COVID-19, and complete an online screening questionnaire.
Questions the study hopes to answer with regularly-shared results include:
- The infection rate of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, both symptomatic and asymptomatic, over time
- How long a person that encountered the virus can shed the virus
- If an individual can be reinfected again
Researchers also hope to understand which immune responses protect a person from COVID-19, to help generate a vaccine.
More information are available at the CovidWatch websites, both in English and Spanish.
