A 14-year-old Hazen student was arrested Thursday after turning himself into police regarding a threat of violence that caused the high school to close Thursday.

The suspect turned himself into police at about 6 p.m. Thursday. He was released to his parents but will be charged for Investigation of Felony Harassment.

The investigation indicated that the threatening post was intended as a prank, and no actual act of violence was planned. The student’s motivation is unknown at this time.

Just after 8 p.m. Wednesday, Renton officers were notified of an Instagram post threatening to shoot a specific Hazen student and also implying that others might be targets as well.

Detectives identified the suspect with the cooperation of social media companies and by interviewing students who were connected to online activity.

“We take threats like this very seriously and we made solving this case our first priority,” Renton Police Commander Jeff Eddy said in a press release. “If anyone believes they can make anonymous threats like this without getting caught, this should serve as a warning that it isn’t so.”

According to the school district, the suspect and another boy involved in the hoax have been expelled from school.
