The discharge of fireworks is banned in the City of Renton throughout the year, including the Fourth of July, city officials are reminding residents.

A total ban on the use, sale and possession of any fireworks within the city limits of Renton has been in effect since 2005.

“This fireworks ban was instituted in 2005 as a way to protect citizens and their property,” said I. David Daniels, Fire Chief/Emergency Services administrator.

Prior to the ban, property losses caused by fireworks incidents totaled $575,000 over a five-year period, and the city received more than 230 calls every year related to fireworks injuries. After the ban, property loss caused by fireworks in Renton reduced to $8,000 between 2005 and 2007.

The Renton Police and Fire Departments will enforce the ban and will work jointly to issue citations and confiscate fireworks. Violators are subject to both criminal and civil citations and can be fined $100 to $500. Additionally, the sale, possession, and use of explosive devices such as M-80s, M-100’s and homemade or modified fireworks are a felony offense, and violators will face criminal prosecution. Renton’s public fireworks display is on Friday, July 4, at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park, 1201 Lake Washington Blvd., at 10 p.m. Prior to the finale, the day will feature activities for kids and stage entertainment, as well as restaurants and concession stands.
