Highlands community, local businesses celebrate Hispanic heritage

The Renton School District, along with a dozen community partners, celebrated the rich diversity and heritage of families in the Renton Highlands at the annual Community Heritage event in Kiwanis Park, Sept. 4.

The Renton School District, along with a dozen community partners, celebrated the rich diversity and heritage of families in the Renton Highlands at the annual Community Heritage event in Kiwanis Park, Sept. 4.

The event was attended by 400 families and hosted by Centro Rendu of St. Vincent DePaul and served to provide information about school and community organizations that benefit students and families, and to celebrate the Hispanic culture of students and families that attend Highlands and Honey Dew elementary schools.

The celebration was part of the district’s work to engage the school district and community partners that benefit families. It included community resource booths, music and dancing by Folklore Mexicano Tonantzin, free dinner provided by Mayas Restaurant and more.

Local business and community partners that joined in the celebration and information-sharing included Renton Schools, Consejo, Guided Pathways, King County Library System, Mexican Consulate, Labor and Industries, Renton Area Youth and Family Services, Salvation Army, YMCA and others.

Centro Rendu of St. Vincent de Paul is an organization that helps Hispanic adults and their children break the cycle of poverty through education, computer literacy, counseling and navigation of services from other social service agencies.
