Nonprofits, developers and city officials celebrated the result of years of effort at the recent dedication of Liberty Square, a downtown Renton apartment complex that opened in mid-August.

“Ninety-two units of affordable, workplace housing.” That’s how Todd Bennett described Liberty Square at the March 6 dedication ceremony. Bennett is the chair of the board of trustees for DASH (Downtown Action to Save Housing).

Those 92 units filled up in just four months.

“Amazing,” said Mark Gropper, Renton Housing Authority Renton Housing Authority deputy assistant director.

Renton Housing Authority and DASH partnered to build the four-story Liberty Square. DASH is a Bellevue-based, non-profit, low-income housing provider. Woodinville-based Synergy Construction built the complex.

Several of the project’s major players attended last week’s celebration, including Mayor Denis Law and various city officials.

“The completion of this project fulfills a vision the city and City Council has had for some time,” Law said. “To provide quality, affordable housing to people working in our city.”

“I look forward to many more projects just like this,” Law added.

Liberty Square marks 1,000 DASH units built. The nonprofit, which formed in the early 1990s, has built 16 low-income developments. But Liberty Square is DASH’s first project in Renton.

“We’re hoping it’s the first of many,” Bennett said.
