Renton High School received a $25,000 award from Boeing, for its work in preparing students to succeed in the 21st century.
Boeing officials surprised teachers and staff with the John D. Warner Excellence in Education Award Dec. 4.
With the money, the school also received a model of a 777 jet airliner.
The award is given to only one U.S. school annually to those who demonstrate excellence in leadership, teacher quality and student learning.
The award is named in honor of Boeing’s retired chief administrative officer, John Warner, who dedicated much of his community service to supporting mathematics and science education. Warner was in attendance for the ceremony.
Renton High School’s achievements in literacy and exemplary character was also recognized by the United States Department of Education. Representatives visited the school in October as part of President Obama’s nationwide Listening and Learning Tour to gather facts about schools that are achieving at high levels.
