After 12 grueling weeks of training, the City of Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department has graduated 11 new firefighters from its first in-house fire-training academy.

The 11 recruits began training in mid-September and had to successfully complete various physical and mental challenges. Their training included basic firefighting skills, auto extrication, driver’s training, ladder rescue, hazardous materials and public education.

The new City of Renton firefighters are a diverse group, ranging in age from 22 to 38, and come from military, public service and corporate backgrounds. The graduating class includes Renton’s third female firefighter. Several of the new recruits come to the department with bachelor of arts and science degrees and have served as volunteer firefighters in other communities.

“Renton Fire & Emergency Services takes pride in its training program and I am confident that this academy has prepared these 11 talented individuals to step into the role of firefighter and provide an outstanding service to the city and communities we serve,” said Fire Chief I. David Daniels.

The new firefighters will each be assigned to one of the department’s six fire stations where they will be mentored by their fellow firefighters and officers as they continue their training.

The graduation was held Dec. 11 at Carco Theater.
