An apologetic baseball player didn’t go to jail after Renton police determined he had punched an umpire in the jaw during a game at Liberty Park the evening of Aug. 4.
The player was cited with fourth-degree assault. Because he was cooperative, the officer allowed him to leave the park.
The player raised his hand when an officer asked three players sitting on the grass “Who was fighting the umpire?” The player told the officer the umpire “hates” him and was calling a bad game.
The umpire told the officer the players were arguing his calls over balls and strikes. Players were antagonizing him. The umpire ejected the player from the game. The umpire told police the player yelled “You’re kicking me out?” three times and then the player punched him in the jaw, which was swollen and red.
