Fifth graders honored by NSTA

Three fifth graders at St. Anthony School received honorable mention for the diving mask they designed for the recent regional NSTA/Toshiba ExploraVision Competition.

NSTA stands for National Science Teachers Association.

Students competing in the contest designed a product that could exist in 20 years. They also researched the present technology for their product and its history and examine the potential consequences of their product. They planned a Web site for the product and submitted five web-design pages along with a detailed report.

The St. Anthony boys, William Langan Jr., Patrick Stuefloten and Conor Proulx, designed a diving mask that uses algae to produce oxygen so heavy tanks are not needed. The mask could also be used in space and any area where oxygen is needed.

“It is a real out of the box idea!” the boys’ teacher, Therese Buckmeier, said in an e-mail.
