• Recipients of this year’s Lindbergh High School Memorial Scholarships have been selected. Academic scholarships went to Mercy Hoang Nguyen, $1,250; Dalia Amin, $1,000 and Matthew Lemke, $750. Kelsey Cobb also received a Technical Scholarship for $1,000. More than 20 applications were received for this year’s scholarships. Semi-finalists were interviewed by a group of community members whose input was used to select the recipients.
• Three Hazen High School juniors have been selected to participate in a summer learning institute at the Museum of Flight. Alex Harris, Philip Tran and Ryan Wilkinson recently completed a competitive skill/test/interview process to win the internships. The institute will be led by aerospace engineers and NASA scientists. Student will be given the task of designing a human mission to Mars with an emphasis on learning the types of technological problems and issues such a mission entails. Additionally, students will be mentored in educational requirements for a career in aerospace, and encouraged to continue to develop these skills.
• Renton school bus driver Jim Gardin recently took first place in the rookie category at the Puget Sound Educational Service District’s annual school bus safety competition. Gardin placed first out of 18 rookie drivers who have driven school buses for one year or less. More than 40 drivers from 11 school districts competed in the event, which requires drivers to demonstrate exemplary knowledge and skills in driving laws and regulations, school bus pre-trip inspections and driving skill maneuvers. Two other Renton bus drivers, Cheryl Berry and Janine Hendrickson, also placed well in the competition.
• Hazelwood Elementary School student Che Dorris is this year’s winner in the district level of the National School Bus Safety Poster Contest. This year’s theme was “Avoid Harm, Obey the Stop Arm.” Students were asked to create a poster that helped others better understand and obey school bus safety laws. Dorris’ poster has been submitted to the state level competition.
