The Renton Fire Department this week honored Renton resident Donisha Miller (front row, second from right, in the photo above) for her role in notifying the department of fire in the early morning hours of March 5.

According to Chief Mark Peterson, Miller noticed a fire in an apartment building that adjoins the one where she lives, called 911 and then pulled the fire alarm on three buildings to make sure residents could evacuate.

Peterson said the location of the fire in a “void space” meant it would have burned longer before tripping a smoke detector, which meant that Miller’s actions saved lives.

“That took a lot of courage. That took a lot of fortitude,” Peterson said. “It was Donisha’s action that saved some lives that night.”
