Amelia Mann is a fifth grade teacher at Cascade Elementary School. She attended Evergreen State College in Olympia, where she majored in philosophy and minored in physics, then she earned a master’s degree in education from Antioch University in Seattle. Before teaching in Renton, Mann lived in South Korea teaching social studies, English and SAT prep. She also worked as a para-educator in Kent and Renton. Mann has been a teacher in Renton for three years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Adam Swinney is a language arts and social studies teacher at Dimmitt Middle School. He attended the University of Evansville in Indiana where he earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary English education, with a minor in psychology. He then attended the University of Washington to earn a master’s in instructional leadership. Swinney began his teaching experience in Chicago Public Schools as an English teacher. This is his fifth year teaching in Renton.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lindsay Thurston is a second grade teacher at Maplewood Heights Elementary. She attended the University of Washington, where she earned a bachelor’s in fine arts. Thurston then continued her education at Whitworth University to earn a master’s degree in teaching, with a focus on elementary education and art education. Before beginning a career in education, Thurston worked as a merchandising manager and Pacific Northwest Division trainer for Banana Republic retail store. This is her fifth year working in the Renton School District.

As part of the recognition, teachers attend Rotary’s Teacher of the Month recognition luncheon held at the Maplewood Golf Course. Each teacher is introduced, makes a brief comment about their school and classroom, and receives $200 to be used for classroom supplies, or instructional materials.
