Two young businesses owners are putting their crafts together to form Renton’s first indie festival.
“The whole idea is to come see something you’ve never seen before,” said Nich Sullivan, owner of Tyrannosaurus Records (TRx). “I like the idea of us all coming together like The Super Friends,”
He’s gathered four independent label bands and two dance troupes together for a day of entertainment May 15.
“He’s into indie music. I’m into indie craft, and those niches work well together,” said Mary Clymer, owner of happy delusions.
She’ll have about 35 crafters selling their work during the shows at Harambee Church, known for its youth programs.
“I think it’s going to be awesome,” she said.
They’re calling the event UnDisCoVerEd, which describes both their businesses and their artists.
For music Sullivan has booked See Me River, Cock and Swan, Young Lions and Sweet Secrets.
Spotlight Dance and The Hall Break Dancers will both perform.
Sullivan also attracted The Cabiri, a circus troupe. He’s hoping they’ll do walking performances.
Clymer is planning on having several types of jewelry, knitters, card makers and purses.
“It’s just a way to promote Renton and ourselves,” Clymer said.
She opened happy delusions to sell and promote local crafters. Sullivan started TRx to promote local musicians and to draw them downtown.
The festival was the natural result of a friendship and the need to promote their businesses.
“If you don’t have events in the store, there is no certainty,” she said. “We hope to make it a yearly event.”
Money from the festival will go to support Childhood Cancer Sucks, a local nonprofit foundation.
Admission to the all-day event is $10-$12. Tickets are for sale at TRx and BrownPaperTickets.com.
Clymer is also participating in this month’s First Friday block party with the next door Liberty Cafe on the 900 block of South Third Street May 7.
Alongside music, two new artists will be on display, including Clymer’s own felted world art.
