About 25 people came out to help spread about 17 yards of bark mulch at the Kennydale Lions Park for Earth Day.

“They made short work of the project,” said John Brooks, a vice president at the Kennydale Lions Club. “We’re hoping to make this more than just a one-time project”

The club wants to do more for the park, but it doesn’t have the funds. It paid about $400 for the mulch.

“The City of Renton had their own project. They didn’t have any money left over for us,” Brooks said.

The park, on the corner of Aberdeen Avenue Northeast and Northeast 24th Street, needs additional upkeep, including new backboards for the basketball hoops and paint on the park gate.

Most of the volunteers came from the Kennydale Neighborhood Association. The group celebrated with a barbecue lunch after the April 24 event.

The property, originally a gravel pit for I-405 construction, was purchased by the city and turned into a park, Brooks said.
