UPDATE:

A fire in an outdoor cigarette ash can caused nearly a half-million dollars worth of damages to a home in the Renton Highlands early Monday morning.

According to Renton Fire Deputy Chief Greg Hartman, the call came in at approximately 12:30 a.m. and when the first unit arrived the home was engulfed with flames, prompting a second-alarm call for aid.

Hartman said investigators believe the fire was accidental in origin, starting because of a lit cigarette left in ash can left outside the house. The can caught fire and the flames spread from the outside-in.

Hartman said the damage estimate for the blaze is between $450,000 and $500,000.

On a positive note, the family was able to escape and no one was hurt. Hartman said the family is secure and being taken care of.

No one was injured in a two-alarm house fire in the Benson Hills neighborhood early Monday morning.

Seven engine crews, two ladder trucks and two aid cars responded to the fire.

Residents were able to evacuate, but there was extensive damage to the home, an recreational vehicle and a mobile recording lab, according to Renton Fire and Emergency Services Facebook page.

Kent Regional Fire Authority and the City of Tukwila also responded as mutual aid.

The department also received numerous smoke calls for several hours after the fire due to the atmospheric inversion and smoke from the fire.
