Tom Swanson and his A-1 Vacuum and Lockmith are on the move again.
Last June a five-alarm fire on Wells Avenue chased him from his shop where he and his brother Bud had operated their business for about 15 years.
They found a small space around the corner on South Third Street and reopened last September. Another burned-out business, The Comic Den, also found a space on South Third.
Now, Swanson is headed back to Wells, just three doors down from the hole in a row of historic buildings where one once held the two businesses and boarding rooms upstairs.
“I love it,” Swanson said of his new 300-square-foot space. “I am overjoyed.”
This is Swanson’s fifth shop since he started his business nearly 30 years ago in Renton. The first one was on Sunset Boulevard North.
“I am getting good at building shops,” he said.
Swanson has been subleasing 200 square feet of space from the owner of Naan N Curry restaurant next door.
The Wells space won’t require any renovations or electrical upgrades, Swanson said. He has figured out where everything will go and the move is already under way. He likes the broad front windows that give him ample room to display his vacuums in an open area.
Opening day is Monday, April 5. He and his wife Debbie will have refreshments for customers.
The Swansons’ core businesses are locksmith services, including making keys, and vacuum sales and repair.
“I can’t wait,” Swanson said. “I am coming home.”
