Carco Theatre nominated for Governor’s Employer Award

Carco is one of 30 nominees who have maintained “exemplary work recruiting, hiring, retaining and promoting workers with disabilities.”

On Aug. 28, the 2024 nominees for the Governor’s Employer Awards were announced and Renton’s Carco Theatre is among the 30 nominees.

Helmed by the Washington State Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues & Employment (GCDE), the Governor’s Employer Awards honor private, nonprofit, public and youth employers for their “exemplary work recruiting, hiring, retaining and promoting workers with disabilities.”

Carco Theatre is nominated in the “Small Nonprofit Employer” category, along with Central Washington Disability Resources (Ellensburg), Seattle Children’s Playgarden (Seattle), Che Family Foundation/I-Ching Acupuncture (Mukilteo/Edmonds) and Washington Vocational Services (Everett).

“We are honored to have been considered for this award, and will continue to provide a productive and compassionate workplace,” said Carco Theatre Manager Johnathon Crick.

Carco Theatre is owned by the City of Renton and managed by the nonprofit organization Puget Sound Access that seeks to “create a nurturing and professional space for independent film, children’s programs, and multicultural organizations and diverse populations to connect with the region’s audiences.” With over 300 seats, and hosting a wide array of entertainment events that include local stage, music and comedy performances, the venue is located at 1717 Maple Valley Hwy. in Renton

“We have nominees from a wide variety of industries,” said Awards Committee Chair Yvonne Bussler-White. “Each nominee has demonstrated a commitment to people with disabilities as valued members of the workforce. We applaud their efforts and thank them for leading the way to inclusion.”

According to the GCDE, a panel of Governor’s Committee members and volunteers will select and announce the award recipients at a ceremony in October, which will be at the Kitsap Conference Center in Bremerton.
