Anthony Bourdain once said that there was something special about enjoying cold beer in the afternoon at a mostly empty pub, and evidently, he was not the only one who felt that way.
There were several groups of people enjoying cold beer, good food and each other’s company when I visited Renton’s The Local 907 to try their fare for the first time.
Parties of different generations filled the venue just around 2 p.m. on the day I visited. Tables full of old friends, co-workers, and family joined together, and right away I knew what kind of establishment this was — and what it represents to the community.
I was there to try the food, as I enjoy pub food as much as I enjoy a cold beer, and it did not disappoint.
The menu had all the delicious comfort foods you may expect from a pub with fried goodies like wings, fried pickles and onion rings. However, it also included some relatively unique options like fried green beans and the Canadian classic poutine — french fries smothered in brown gravy and cheese curds.
Of course, they had a variety of tasty sandwiches like pastrami Reuben; a classic Cubano layered with ham, pulled pork, mustard, Swiss and pickles; an Italian beef sandwich with brisket slow cooked with pepperoncini and onions in the classic Chicago way; and even a Monte Cristo layered with ham, turkey, and Gouda before its battered and grilled then served with sweet raspberry jam and maple syrup for dipping.
Their list of burgers was extensive, including a burger with pastrami, one topped with BBQ pulled pork and fried onion rings, even one known for its spicy habanero hot sauce.
I elected to try the “All Day Breakfast Burger,” which includes bacon, ham and a fried egg. It was an easy choice as I promised myself as a child that I would always order a burger if it came with an egg on it. The yolk is runny and rich on top of a traditional burger and it just makes sense.
It was a tender, delicious and well-assembled burger that did not fall apart when I ate it — this is a rule all good sandwiches must follow.
I look forward to my next visit at the community watering hole that is The Local 907 to try more of its delicious menu options and to taste more than one cold beer outside of the daylight hours of a workday.
