This week, workers from Heath Northwest hoisted into place the four, 8-foot letters that make up the store’s name on to the new, two-story IKEA building currently under construction on Southwest 41st Street.
In total, the new sign is 144 feet wide. It took a full crew and a crane most of Tuesday to lock the letters in place.
The new, 399,000 square-foot store is being built on the site of the current store’s former parking garage so the company can keep the current location open during construction.
The current IKEA store was built on the 29-acre site in 1994 and was the first U.S. franchise for the Swedish retailer. When completed, the new store will feature a larger assortment of merchandise, an expanded restaurant for serving Swedish specialties and other family friendly features, including a “Children’s IKEA” area in the showroom, baby-care rooms, play areas throughout the store, and preferred parking.
The company is hoping to open the new store next year.
