In the aftermath of the “bomb cyclone” that swept through the Pacific Northwest in November and left thousands without power, the Renton Chamber of Commerce and Alteza came together to provide free freezers for local businesses and restaurants in need of refrigeration.
While the freezers proved to be unnecessary for local restaurants, they were there when the Salvation Army in Renton was in need.
During the storm, the Salvation Army was using generators to keep some lights as well as the refrigerators and freezers running. But when a freezer ceased to run, the organization reached out on Dec. 4 to the Chamber, which had advertised the free use of the freezers on social media.
“They were all empty and then an hour later, the freezers were filled with three pallets of frozen food,” said Chamber Finance Director Kevin Hays. “It filled four freezers from top to bottom.”
Originally provided 10 freezers, the Chamber of Commerce was only able to use seven due to limited space in the building. The lockable freezers were delivered on Nov. 22.
“This generous offering is made possible by Daniel and his team at Alteza Commercial Restaurant Supply, who have covered the labor and expenses to bring these freezers to us,” said Chamber CEO Diane Dobson in an email.
The frozen donated food was meant to be picked up on Dec. 9, but the freezer and the flooring at the Salvation Army required more repairs, so the food will remain at the Chamber in the meantime.
“The freezers at the Chamber [of Commerce], they have been a blessing to us,” said Captain James Park of the Salvation Army.
