Renton Farmers Market finds: Milk and sweets

Renton Farmers Market runs 3 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday at 233 Burnett Ave. S.

Green Valley Dairy is a family-owned and operated farm in Cashmere, about a two hour drive east from Renton. The business is less than a year old and is owned by Linda Wiley, who is a single mom of three kids.

“It’s a one-woman farm,” Wiley said. She is the animal care-taker, milker, delivery driver, and manager of the farm, which sells raw cow and goat milk.

Wiley has two older boys and one younger girl, Mary, who was helping out with the Renton Farmers Market booth on Tuesday.

“For me, it’s about finding a groove with the animals,” Wiley said. “It’s about living with your animals. Cows are so sweet, they have a familial bond more than any.” She centers the farm around finding what works best for the cows and goats naturally and taking the time to notice their personalities and what makes them happy.

Wiley started the farm in the midst of life changes, but to be starting something new amidst it all is, she said, “empowering”.

Green Valley Dairy is not currently online, but sells in retail stores and farmers markets across Washington state.

Colorful goodies

Keatious Bakin & Kakin LLC is a family-owned sweetshop bakery based in White Center and owned by Ashley Scott, who has been cooking her entire life and baking cakes for over a decade. She and her two daughters KJ and Sandria Scott moved to Washington from Alabama in 2017, and once here, she decided to start a bakery.

“I like meeting new people and going to new places, experiencing new things,” KJ said about running the bakery booth in different farmers markets.

The business is named after Ashley’s mother, Keatious, who has been baking for over 30 years, Ashley said. The booth’s set up and products—cake slices, cupcakes, and popcorn—are all colorful, popping with pinks, blues, and purples.

Ashley also loved watching Betty Boop growing up, and the icon is now featured as the business’s logo and theme. Betty Boop is Black in the logo, which, as Ashley said, is true to Black child entertainer Esther Jones’ image and stage persona, who is said to have inspired the original character of Betty Boop.

Keatious Bakin & Kakin LLC also sells in the Auburn mall, and online orders can be placed at https://bakesy.shop/b/keautious-bakin-kakin-llc.
