I appreciate this article (“West Hill is full of economic promise,” Renton Reporter, Nov. 5, 2010) highlighting the woes of West Hill. It’s going to be an uphill climb, trying to overcome the strong presence of casinos and convenience stores. Those businesses have no incentive to participate in cleaning up the West Hill or making it more family friendly. They would likely lose business if they did.
But if the joint economic development teams (Renton and West Hill) can create a plan that motivates local citizens and potential new local businesses, there might be a breakthrough.
My wish list for local businesses:
- organic grocery store
- bookstore
- hardware store
- video or record store
- coffee shop [not Starbucks!]
- bike shop
We’ve lived on the West Hill for 10 years; it would be nice to see a revival. The models for revitalization success are all around us; see Columbia City, Georgetown, White Center, Burien.
