I am proud and very grateful to have John Houston (our prevention intervention specialist) as a co-worker and excellent resource for our at-risk teens here at Black River High School. (“Redemption” Renton Reporter, March 5, 2010) John is a real giver and I’ve heard so many positive comments from students who decide to visit with John.

After working with troubled teens for eight years, I know there are far too many students in Renton – directly or indirectly – seriously impacted by drugs or alcohol. They need someone to connect with in a confidential setting, a person with John’s unique qualities. Our students respect and like Mr. Houston; they give him one of the highest compliments a staff member can get: “He keeps it real.” He cares and it shows.

I wish we had his services more than two days a week. To read that this much-needed member of our team (and our village, people!!!) may lose his job due to budget cuts is so disheartening. If these young people don’t get help now, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out the affect it will have on our community. The ripple effect …
