Real worry is that trustees will pick next RTC president

This e-mail is sent as a compliment to your editorial of Aug.14, 2009. (“Why is it so hard to answer ‘why?’ Editor’s Note, on firing of Renton Technical College President Don Bressler) You hit all the nails on the head.

Unfortunately, I still cannot believe how out-of-touch the three negative RTC board members are with the community they are supposed to be serving. I am excluding Trustee Zwicker from my criticism. I am very fearful of “taking the college in another direction.” To me that means taking RTC’s success to date and moving it into failure. How in the world can we sit still for this?

During this economic crisis these trustees will waste taxpayers’ dollars on paying a successful college president to NOT work, encumber the school with recruiter costs to select another executive and pay a salary to an interim president (to my way of thinking it is about a $400,000 cost hit). How can thinking people justify this waste of taxpayers’ dollars? How many students could we educate for that amount of money?

My real worry is that it is this group of trustees, with obviously poor leadership skills and total lack of judgment for community good, will be charged with selecting a new RTC President. My fear is that this group will be looking for someone they can micromanage and will not be connected to the community the college is supposed to serve. That is the real travesty in this debacle.

How will the RTC Foundation raise money for a school that appears to be totally dysfunctional? I am sure those foundation members are asking themselves that question.

I remain supportive of Rich Zwicker who knows that the role and responsibilities of a community college trustee is to represent public interest, student learning and the best for the community.

I cannot understand why this negative group of trustees was selected to lead an institution that they appear to care so little about. I have no confidence in the three negative members of the board to do the right things for the college or the community.

All taxpayers and other supporters of this great institution should be outraged.
