The People have chosen “The Disconnect” as their favorite film of Renton FilmFrenzy IV.
The voting for the People’s Choice Curvee was conducted online at rentonreporter.com. “The Disconnect” won handily with 59 votes or slightly more than half of the votes cast.
Renton Reporter Publisher Ellen Morrison will present the Curvee to the film’s producer, Mitch Shepherd of Renton, and its star, John Wu, at Monday’s City Council meeting.
“The Disconnect” was an award-winner at the Curvee Award Gala last month at the IKEA Performing Arts Center. The judges selected the film as Best Picture and its star, John Wu, was named Best Actor.
“I am thrilled to win,” said Shepherd. “This competition offered a great opportunity to local filmmakers, and I’m proud to have my work associated with this burgeoning festival.”
“The Disconnect” tells the story of a man (Wu) headed for his wedding who’s looking for some marriage advice. He calls a wrong number and ends up getting that advice from a stranger, only seen from behind playing a video game. The stranger is played by Shepherd.
“My intention in creating the film was to just tell a good story that connected with people on different levels . . . hitting at the simple humor but also adding at least one or two complex emotions.”
They had the title, “The Disconnect,” already in mind. But they saw the actual words again, on the rail car plaque next to the Renton History Museum.
“That made us feel that we were somewhat ‘blessed’ by Renton,” he said.
