The Renton Municipal Arts Commission is presenting the works of fine art sculptor David Shenk on display until April 1 at Carco Theatre next to the Renton Community Center.
Shenk is a Renton-based fine art sculptor who creates one-of-a-kind, three-dimensional “faces of man” hammered out of metal. He has a degree in industrial technology from Western Washington University with a focus on vehicle design.
Shenk has worked in many mediums but his interest in metal sculpting grew out of his work restoring priceless vintage automobiles.
Using a 2.5 ton Yoder power hammer and a variety of smaller tools, he is able to transform thick sheets of metal into lifelike representations of the human face. His latest pieces have included sculpted portraits of known individuals. These are not cast but rather formed by hundreds of thousands of precision hammer blows, shrinking and stretching the metal to leave behind a rich texture that shines like thousands of tiny mirrors.
According to Shenk, his work “celebrates our shared humanity and speaks to the dignity of the individual.” “I want to restore our sense of purpose at a time when it is too soon forgotten,” he said.
