Hazen student wins poster contest, billboard display and $500

The winner of this year’s high school career poster contest will receive a larger than life prize – a billboard of his poster.

Hazen’s 16-year-old Jeremy Undis won the 2010 Career and Life Skills Education (CSLE) poster contest Wednesday.

He’ll take home a $500 scholarship courtesy of the Renton Kiwanis, and about 50 copies of his posters will be hung around town.

“We want kids to be able to display their work,” said Jay Leviton, CLSE director in the Renton School District.

Undis’ poster will likely be on a billboard near City Hall during February, Leviton said.

Participation was high this year, with about 60 students submitting digital posters.

About 20 judges from throughout the community and school district rated posters based on clarity, originality and attractiveness.

“Every year the kids come up with great ideas,” said the program’s Roxie Root, who attended the event.

Several middle-school students were among those invited to judge.

“This provided them with the opportunity to see what the secondary students are doing,” said Debbie Blocher, who organized the event.

Each year during the second week of February the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) has a week-long celebration, Leviton said. “We try to celebrate it in Renton for the entire month of February.”

As a part of the requirements, students had to use three phrases, including ACTE’s annual tag line: “Invest in Your Future.”

The poster contest promotes the February celebration and helps CLSE reach out to the community, Leviton said.
