Renton Municipal Arts Commission presenting SUMI-E painting of Darlene Dihel

The Renton Municipal Arts Commission is presenting original SUMI-E (Japanese ink painting) by Darlene Dihel through Nov. 12 at Carco Theatre.

An opening reception is 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 16) to view the art and meet the artist.

Dihel is a retired teacher actively involved with Japanese ink painting. The philosophy of SUMI-E is characteristic of the spirit of zen where nothing is wasted and the world is expressed in a language reduced to the farthest most essential limits. SUMI means “black ink stick” and E represents the word “picture.”

Dihel is a self-taught SUMI-E artist but has recently received formal instruction from the area’s master Sumi artists. She teaches workshops in Washington and Oregon.

She says she has come “full circle” as she is a Renton native, graduating from Renton High School in 1953 and college at Central Washington University in 1957. She lives in Gig Harbor.
