Renton Rotary members hand out dictionaries to third graders

The tradition of handing every third grader dictionaries began in 2005.

Rotary Club of Renton are giving Renton School District third graders the gift of words — or rather the definitions of words.

Over the next two weeks, Rotary members will visit schools throughout the district to present dictionaries to every third grader, continuing a tradition that began in 2005.

Total cost for the dictionaries is estimated to be more than $10,000, and according to a RSD press release, this initiative “represents the community’s commitment to early childhood education and the importance of having students read at grade level by third grade.”

Students who previously received the dictionaries say they use the books with their siblings and, in some cases, to help teach English to family members, stated the release. Other Renton Rotary initiatives include providing children with new coats in the winter and offering family’s free healthcare screening and treatment as part of the RotaCare project.
